BLOG Post from the Mayor of Seattle

An Award Winning Municipal Fleet

Sometimes you hear people say government never does anything right, but the City’s Fleet Management Division in the Department of Finance and Administrative Services is proving them wrong! Today I had the pleasure of accepting not one, but two national awards for fleet excellence on behalf of our City Fleet.

Fleet Owner magazine recognized Seattle as the best vocational fleet of 2011, largely on the strength of our green innovations, such as our use of electric vehicles. And 100 Best Fleets named Seattle the top fleet of 2012 for the many investments made in technology, such as automating the City’s motor pool and upgrading the City’s fuel management software.

And I’m proud to say these awards come on top of two our fleet received in 2010:

·         #1 Government Green Fleet in North America – 100 Best Fleets

·         Sustainable Fleet Award – NAFA – National Fleet Management Association

We’re also maintaining a 4-star (out of 5) certification in the Evergreen Fleets program. Evergreen Fleets assists fleets in making smart, environmentally responsible choices through a voluntary “green” certification program.

For years, the City has been a leader in fleet management. We’ve made green innovations, such as hiring a green fleet coordinator to manage our environmental efforts, reducing fuel consumption by 175,000 gallons in less than 3 years, and expanding the use of alternative fuels so now half of the entire City fleet does, or can, use an alternative fuel source. In fact, when you add our 2010 #1 Government Green Fleet in North America award from 100 Best Fleets into the mix, you’ll see we pull off the awards equivalent of what all you hockey fans know of as a true “hat trick!”

I’m really proud that municipalities throughout the country network with Seattle to capitalize on our fleet management knowledge, efforts and successes. But what’s even better is all the great work being done just in our region.  In fact, this year, Bellevue and King County fleets were included in 100 Best Fleet’s top 20 fleets. I’m sure our region is so well represented because we go the extra mile to share information with each other and learn from each other’s best practices.

Congratulations again to all of the staff in the Fleets Management Division.  I’m proud of your hard work and dedication to fleet management excellence!

Mayor Michael McGinn, Seattle
